Description
A Blue Calico transfer printed gravy boat and underplate, Staffordshire, England, circa 1940 – 1960s.
Crownford China Co. was a New York-based importer and distributor that marketed Staffordshire transferware china, notably the popular blue and white Calico pattern.
The “Calico” pattern features stylized, chintz-like flowers, characterized by its all-over, densely packed floral design, inspired by the older 19th century transferware.
The Calico design itself has roots in the 1800s. The pattern remains a classic example of the American markets demand for traditional British Staffordshire transferware during the mid-20th century.
The gravy boat measures: 7 in. L x 3.25 in. W x 3.5 in. H
The underplate measures: 8 in. L x 5.25 in. W x 1 in. H
Marked: Crownford China Co. – Staffordshire England, CALICO
In very good vintage condition.
