A child’s assiette parlante, a talking plate, illustrated by Benjamin Rabier for Sarreguemines, France – circa 1900.

Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939), was a French children’s author, playwright, animator, illustrator, and comic book artist.

He became famous for his cartoons for the ‘Laughing Cow’ brand and the character Gédéon the duck.

The plate is titled ‘Meprise’ and bears a caption in French: Le renard-allons, bon ….encore le pluie.

Drat—the fox—oh great… rain again.

A fox puts his paw out of his den to check the ongoing rainy weather, but we see a bird dropping ‘rain’ from above.

One of a series featuring Rabier’s amusing children’s illustrations, signed by the artist.

Charming in a child’s nursery.

Transfer printed on cream colored earthenware, with applied colored glazing and a gold rim.

7.75 inches in diameter x .75 inches high.
