Description
A scarce Art Nouveau painted metal or Jappaned bird cage, possibly German, circa 1900-1920.
The black square cage shows a shapely eaved roof with the original top hanging handle.
Hand-painted geometric and stylized floral patterns in gold and orange adorn all sides.
The cage sits on a square base raised on four paw shaped feet, with two removable brass cased glass side panels, and a slide-out bottom for easy cleaning.
The glass panels are hand-painted with images of dancing black horses and orange and black fan decorations.
Gold tone metal appliques adorn the eaves in a rose and scroll pattern.
A front opening in the cage is spring loaded.
Assembled with the original painted brass screws.
11.75 in. L x 9.75 in. W x 15.25 inches H., the handle adds an additional 4 inches in height.
Mild bending, surface wear, and light rust as is expected.
