Description
A set of twelve luncheon sized plates, Celeste Blue Iridescent Stretch Glass, the Fenton Glass Company, circa 1920-1930.
The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, by brothers Frank and John Fenton. The manufacturer introduced their Celeste Blue Glass in 1916, and it became very popular in the 1920s through the 1930s.
Stretch Glass is iridized glass which has been pressed and molded by hand, then re-heated after the application of metallic sprays – causing the iridescence. This process produces fine striations on the surface of the glass. The stretch effect is further enhanced by crimping the edges of the plates by hand.
The plates are a gorgeous vibrant blue. The glass is highly iridescent, changing with the light.
The wide rims show the hand crimped striations, making each piece unique.
The plates are substantial – thick and heavy.
7.75 inches in diameter x .75 inches high.
All plates are in very good condition.
