Description
A handmade magnifying glass originally part of a chatelaine, dating to the early 19th Century, France.
A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain is mounted with useful household items such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, smelling salts, and household seals.
The French term châtelaine translates to the mistress of a chateau. Chatelaines were typically worn by housekeepers in the 19th century.
The round magnifier is encased in a hand formed copper wire holder with a jump ring attached at the end for hanging from a chain.
A copper wire hook holds the glass in place. The magnifier works super well.
An unusual piece – the glass measures 2 inches in diameter, the overall length is 4 inches.
Good antique condition.
