Description
An 18th century Georgian English Bilston Battersea enameled snuff or patch box, the motto reads, “In Memory of a Friend.”
An example of Memento Mori, which translates from the Latin, “Remember that you must die.”
The pastoral scene shows an unfurled scroll with the motto written in black script. A large urn is painted in Sienna, a pine tree stands in the foreground. On the left, a steepled church stands in the distance.
A deep cobalt blue is enameled over the copper framed base, the lid’s interior is mirrored.
1.5 in. L x 1.25 in. W x .75 in. H
Very good antique condition, light lining to the enamel. The mirror shows no foxing.
