Chinese Export Famille Rose Medallion Reticulated Rim Plates, Set/6

$3,250.00

Description

A set of six Chinese Export or Canton porcelain plates in the Rose Medallion style, circa 1820.

Dating to the later period of the Qing Dynasty, the plates are hand-enameled in a complex pattern with a reticulate edged rim made of interlocking enameled circles. A highly intricate pattern with layers upon layers of delicate painting.

The plates feature a central medallion depicting a bird, tree peony, and a large rock surrounded by four alternating panels of figures in a Chinese landscape, or birds with florals and fruits. The panels are outlined by intricate borders of scrolls, green leaves, and pink peonies. Bats, butterflies, and birds decorate the outer edges and fill in the spaces between the four panels.

The swirling pattern is enameled in a luminous color palette of pink, green, blue, and yellow on a soft gold ground. The inner rim is painted in a bittersweet red, and meets the pierced circles, terminating in a running floral rim. The center of the plate has the central gold circle with a bird, a hallmark of Rose Medallion.

White versos, without markings.

8.25 in. Diameter x 1 in. H

All plates are in very good antique condition.

The coloring varies from plate to plate, especially on the reticulate circles, as expected of hand enameling.

One plate has a chip to the rear footing, not affecting the seating of the plate.
