A large Aesthetic Movement platter, Thomas Furnival & Sons, Cobridge, Staffordshire, England, circa 1879.
The Japanesque ‘Formosa’ pattern is transfer printed in black on a cream earthenware body and shows images of bamboo, birds in flight, cartouches and flowering branches. A fan encloses a seaside scene, a border consists of two unique geometric designs interspersed with a stylized flower. The pattern name may relate to the Island of Formosa (Beautiful Island), located SW of Japan.

Excellent antique condition, stilt marks on the rim, a few small glaze pops to the verso.
