Description
An oversized ironstone pitcher in the Aesthetic Taste, made by Holmes, Plant & Mayday at The Sylvester Pottery Works – Burslem, Staffordshire, England, date marked 1882.
Charming in its simplicity, the ‘Seine’ pattern exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement philosophy of “Art for Arts Sake.”
Transfer printed in sepia on a creamy white ground, the jug has a triangular shaped body.
A floral pattern with cartouches of sailing ships and birds, finished with geometric bordering to the upper rim and handle.
Wonderful for holding a large bouquet of flowers, impactful for the size.
8 inches wide x 8.5 inches from handle to spout, x 11 inches H
Makers marks with the pattern name and an English registry lozenge showing the letter L for the year 1882
A tiny glaze slip on the spout, otherwise in excellent antique condition.
