Description

An original British School Regency Period watercolor study of a Blackbird’s nest and eggs, mounted in a Georgian Period Maple frame – Dated 1863.

These watercolors were largely painted by young girls from aristocratic families during the Jane Austen period. The arts of painting and music were the primary part of their education, and they became amazingly skilled.

This example is unusual for the large size.

The subject is a nature study of a nest belonging to the English Blackbird. The nest is surprisingly detailed and realistically painted, right down to the loose twigs with leaves, and the four blue speckled unhatched eggs.

Carefully colored with delicate shadowing, on a soft watercolor paper. The painting has been titled and dated by the artist, May, 1863.

The frame is beveled Birds Eye Maple with an inner frame in a silver leaf.

Painted by a very talented young artist, and wired for hanging.

Outer frame: 17.75 in. L x 12.75 in.W x  1.25 in. H

Inner frame: 13.5 in. L in. x 9 in. W

Very good antique condition, not examined out of frame. The hand made frame is in remarkable condition showing minor age wear.
