Description

An original British School Regency Period watercolor study of a Willow Wren’s nest and egg, mounted in a Georgian Period fruitwood frame – Dated 1863.

These watercolors were largely painted by young girls from aristocratic families during the Jane Austen period. The arts of painting and music were the primary part of their education, and they became amazingly skilled.

This example is unusual for the large size.

The subject is a nature study of a nest belonging to the English Willow Wren. The nest is surprisingly detailed and realistically painted, right down to the moss the little bird has used to cushion her nest.  A single speckled egg is shown beside the nest.

Carefully colored with delicate shadowing, on a soft watercolor paper. The painting has been titled by the artist, Willow Wren, Shalford, 12th July, 1863.

Shalford is a charming village and civil parish in Surrey, England.

The frame is beveled fruitwood with an inner frame in gold leaf.

Painted by a very talented young artist, and wired for hanging.

Outer frame: 17.5 in. L x 12.75 in.W x  1.25 in. H

Inner frame: 13.5 in. L in. x 9 in. W

Very good antique condition, not examined out of frame. The hand made frame is in remarkable condition showing minor age wear.
