A charming pair of tin-glazed terracotta Chicks from Bavent, Normadie, France circa 1900-1920.

Since the Middle Ages, Bavent is known for the clay that gives a rich and beautiful coloring to terracotta pieces. The chicks are molded by hand using the same traditions that date to the mid 19th Century. They stand true to form in both attitude and size. Glazed in a gorgeous bright canary-yellow with orange beaks and feet, they stand on a crop of green grass.

The first artisanal faÏence pottery factory in Bavent was established in 1842 by industrialist Maurice Comptet, and was named The Tuilerie du Mesnil de Bavent. It became well  known for the production of tiles, pots, life-sized animals, and architectural ornaments, The Mesnil pottery of Bavent holds a French Enterprise Label of Living Heritage.

Marked on the base with the Bavent impressed stamp.

One chick shows two minor slips in the glazing, one on the base and another on the side body.
