A French Majolica oval asparagus server from the Clairfontaine Faiencerie, France, circa 1860-1880.
A complex and textured mold showing asparagus spears and overlapping green fern leaves on a stippled turquoise blue ground. The creamy white asparagus spears are tipped in olive green and burgundy red. Nicely rounded edging with a deep rear footing.
The faiencerie of Clairefontaine was founded in 1804 by Jean Francois Estienne in an old monastery, situated in the Haute Saone region. In 1833, the manufacture was bought by Jean Baptiste Rigal, running the pottery until 1860. Clairfontaine closed its doors in 1938.
