French Faïence Hand Painted Cherub Plates, set of 10 – SOLD

Description

SOLD

A charming set of ten French faïence hand painted Cherub plates, a reissue of the original 18th Century Sceaux mold, circa late 19th Century.

Sceaux was a faiënce and porcelain works, founded near Paris. The factory was in production from 1748-1794. Molds and patterns were often sold when factories disbanded and they were commonly reissued in the late 19th to the early 20th centuries.

The scalloped rim, creamy white glazed plates are skillfully painted with centers showing different scenes of cherubs or putti in pink. The figures are shown in the clouds, holding musical instruments and ribbons. Each central scene is bordered with a circle of green leaves. Green ribbons in a festoon pattern decorate the wide outer rim. The green is then highlighted with delicate brushwork in black.

Each plate is pieced on the rear footing for hanging, and marked with a hand painted. France.
