Description

Found in France, a set of four, large glass canning preserve jars with chromolithographed labels of vegetable seeds, circa early 1900s.

The jars were repurposed for storing vegetable seeds supplied by the French seed merchants, and then offered for sale in the farm stands and small markets that dotted the French countryside. Printed using an old process, the images are boldly graphic and beautifully colored.

The jars were hand blown into a mold with glass in varying shades of green or blue-green. The lids have an inner lip for secure seating.

Three jars show the L’Ideale brand name in raised lettering, one shows the brand name La Lorraine. Each base is marked with raised numbers showing capacity,  ranging from .75 to 1.5 liters. The labels are titled in French and showing an image of the vegetable.

Radis Demi-Long, Ecarlate Hatif.  An Aqua Blue jar, marked L’Ideale Brevetee SGDG  1.5 Liter.  8.75 in. H x 5 in. W

Carotte Blanch. An Aqua Blue jar, marked L’Ideale,  3/4 Liter.  7.75 in, H x 4 in. W
