Description

A French glazed porcelain Chicken Tureen or Poultry Roaster, by Pillivuyt Mehun, circa 1900.

The phrase, “A chicken in every pot!” has its origins in seventeenth century France –  Henry IV pledged that each of his subjects would enjoy “a chicken in his pot every Sunday.”

Established in 1823, Pillivuyt, Mehun-sur-Yèvre, is one of the oldest and most prestigious French porcelain makers. Founded in Bourges, Central France by Louis Charles Pillivuyt, they are known for their roasting dishes made for serving game. The manufactory won prizes in five universal exhibitions : 1855, Paris, 1862, London, 1867, Paris, 1878  Paris, and 1889 Paris.

The tureen is made of porcelain, with a terra cotta colored glaze on the exterior, and a clean white interior. The top handle is formed of two matte glazed chicken heads with glass eyes. Chicken feet adorn the two side handles. This mold is a French classic, of the highest quality, going from oven to table.
