Description
From Sarreguemines, France, a very scarce majolica glazed covered tureen, circa 1870.
A basket and napkin form covered tureen modeled in the Trompe L’oeil style. The base is molded as a woven basket with two side handles. A ‘cloth’ napkin impressed with a floral and checkered pattern and a Greek key border, lines the basket form base. Peeking out from the napkin, at the corners of both the base and the lid are various vegetables including green asparagus spears, green podded peas, a white turnip top, and small brown carrots. The top handle of the lid is formed by two napkin peaks.
A complicated piece, cleverly done – loosely rectangular in shape, furthering the tromp l’oeil effect.
Glazed on a cream colored clay ground with a sepia glaze to the key pattern, and additional naturalistic coloring to the basket details, and to the vegetables.
Impressed makers marks to underside, Majolica – Sarreguemines and the pattern No. 1448.
