A French Barbotine majolica pig water pitcher, Frie Onnaing, circa 1921.
Known as the ‘Maitre d’Hotel’ the pig is dressed as a waiter with a wine bottle tucked under one arm and a serviette draped over the other. He holds a cork and bottle opener, and sits on a chair that forms the handle. He wears a white apron tied over a gray suit, red tie and red boutonniere, and a turquoise cap. The interior has the red glaze Onnaing is known for.
This example has exceptional color, made when the Onnaing factory resumed production after WWI, as evidenced by the makers mark on the bottom.
Marked with an impressed ‘Frie Onnaing, Made in France’ Mold No. 737
