Description
A majolica Lobster covered pâté tureen by George Jones, Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa 1870.
A scarce and highly desirable piece with collectors, a Palissy style oval basketweave Pâté tureen having a figural lobster finial. Realistic in both molding and coloring, this tureen shows Jones’ at his best.
The pink and cream colored cooked lobster serves as the top handle, and lays across the lid on a bed of brown and green seaweeds. The base is molded as a woven basket, also showing raised mold work of seaweeds. Both the underside of the lid and the basket are glazed in the bright turquoise blue often seen in Jones’ pieces. The underfoot is glazed in a mottled tortoise shell effect, another hallmark of George Jones.
Marked: an English registry mark underfoot with the Jones unglazed ‘thumbprint” notated with the “3578” pattern number. A sticker on the verso of the lid shows a shipping label from London.
