A scarce Etruscan majolica Fern pitcher, by Griffen, Smith & Hill, circa 1880-1885.
Founded in Pennsylvania, GS&H is the best known of the American majolica potteries. The name Etruscan, borrowed from Josiah Wedgwood’s Etruria line, was inspired by the discovery of pottery from Ancient Rome.
A simple but elegantly molded pitcher with realistically detailed ferns rising from a pale yellow base and fading to a pure white ground. The ferns are glazed in a strong spring green tipped in yellow ochre or a pale pink. A gently peaked upper rim reveals the pink interior. The handle is also molded as a fern leaf.
The most delicate of the GSH molds, found in two sizes, this is the larger example. Marked with the encircled GSH monogram and Etruscan Majolica.
8.5 in. H x 6.5 in. from handle to spout.
In incredible antique condition. The very light expected wear to the high points.
