A hand-colored copper engraving from the original drawing by James Hope Stewart, of an Indian Rhinoceros, circa 1836 – framed.
James Stewart (1789–1856) was a Scottish natural history artist and painter famous for his detailed animal illustrations featured in prominent 19th-century publications.
This fine engraving first appeared in Sir William Jardine’s famous multi-volume work, The Naturalist’s Library, 1833– 1843, specifically the Mammalia, Pachydermes volume published in Edinburgh in 1836).
The Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros Unicornis) was exhibited live at the Liverpool Zoological Gardens.
The print was engraved from a copper plate by William Home Lizars.
Framed in a simple brown stained wood frame with the original hanging tab.
9.75 inches L x 7.75 inches W x .50 inches high.
An antique print showing areas of light yellowing as expected, the frame shows light wear and age related wear to the backing.
