Description
A majolica multi-colored glazed cabbage leaf on basket rim plate, Josiah Wedgwood, circa 1870.
Most often found in a solid green glaze, cabbage leaf plates were also made briefly in full color during the late 1800’s as part of Wedgwood’s Leafage series. These full color plates are glazed in a combination of brown, yellow ochre, and green. They are rather scarce glazed in full color.
The plate is moulded with the single, large cabbage leaf on a brown basket weave ground. Crisp mold work seen on the basket weave rim and to the veining of the leaf. Bright, bold majolica glazing.
The verso has an unusual treatment showing the hand of the glazer.
