A Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Majolica green glazed- Seal-Molded Ice-Cream Tray, England – Date code EGH for 1878
A very scarce rectangular tray with the center molded as waves breaking on the oceans’ surface, with three seals swimming among seaweed. The icy rim is modeled as a wide glacial wall with two recumbent seals as handles, the sides have a mottled glaze in brown, green and ochre.
A humorous piece originally made to serve ice cream, with beautiful, dimensional mold work.
Exhibited: ‘English Majolica’, Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York, 1982.
Marked: Impressed Wedgwood, with the date code EGH, the H for 1878. A hand-painted pattern number.
