A French majolica glazed Absinthe water pitcher formed as a sitting Chimpanzee in a maître d’hôtel jacket, Keller & Guerin St. Clément, circa 1890 – 1910.
This Barbotine majolica pitcher was made to be used for pouring water over a sugar cube in the Absinthe drinking ritual. The earthenware monkey wears a blue jacket with red buttons and sits on a red base. His tail forms the handle, his mouth is the spout. Most often found with a white jacket, the blue coloring is more unusual.
