A set of six authentic French Bell Epoque Era Absinthe glasses, circa 1890-1910.
These heavy glasses were used in French bistros, bars, and cafes, in the ritual of drinking the addictive beverage called, ‘la fée verte’ – the green fairy.
Popular with Bohemians and artists, the original potent formula for Absinthe was eventually banned in France by 1915.
A classic shape with alternating facets to the body of the glasses, a pedestal base and weighted bottoms, some showing small bubbles and pontil marks distinctive to hand blown glass.
The rims are designed to support slotted spoons for holding a sugar cube. Ice water would be dripped over the sugar, diluting the green absinthe, and turning it into a milky white Pastis.
Glasses: 2.5 in. diameter at the base, with a top opening of 1.75. – Â 5.5 in. height.
Suitable for enjoying any Pastis liquer.
Handmade artisan glasses will vary slightly in size and weight.
In very good antique condition with minor age wear.
