A trompe l’oeil wall plaque showing a pink lobster or crayfish on a rustic cobalt blue and white platter, painted in the Rouen style. Signed LB, for Léon Brard, circa 1870 – 1880.
Red earthenware, glazed in creamy white with the blue pattern following a scalloped rim. In the oval center well, the dimensional crayfish is naturalistically modeled and painted.
In 1859, Brard opened a studio in Tours to work in the Palissy style. As a former painter of marine still life, he developed a distinct style, rather then imitate the ceramics of Bernard Palissy.
