An incredible three-piece Barbotine Art Nouveau white asparagus serving set consisting of a covered tureen and a large under platter, from the Luneville pottery, France, circa 1880-1910. White asparagus is a springtime delicacy in Northern Europe, this set was made specifically for serving them.
The oval under tray shows the globe-like heads of the artichoke plant and the tips of asparagus spears on a ground of overlapping stalks and leaves, glazed in deep greens and purple on a cream ground.
The covered tureen is a free standing box formed of a bundle of white asparagus, bound with a deep mauve roping. Spiked artichoke leaves form the four feet and a bent asparagus stalk forms the lid handle. The base of the tureen is pierced to allow drainage to the under tray. Both pieces are molded in high relief.
