Description

A scarce serving set made up of a MacLaren’s Imperial Milk Glass cheese jar set into a Sterling silver holder with a lid and serving spoon, circa 1900-1920.

MacLaren’s Imperial Cheese was first produced in 1892 by Alexander MacLaren in Stratford, Ontario. MacLaren was a businessman and politician who also served in the Canadian House of Commons.

MacLaren’s was made from aged sharp cheddar cheese and sold in small milk glass jars. The product was so popular that multiple sterling silver manufacturers produced holders with serving spoons for a suitable table presentation.

The sterling cage shows pierced work, a holder for the small spoon, with a tight fitting lid. Both the lid and spoon are monogrammed and are stamped ‘Sterling.’

The opaque white glass jar also has a lid with the original label printed with the trademarked double cow heads and crossed cheese cutters. The bottom shows the raised makers marks.

A five-piece set measuring 3.25 inches in diameter x 3.25 inches high.

The spoon is 4.25 inches long with a scoop shape bowl.

The glass jar shows dark, tight age lines across the bottom and on one side. The paper label also shows expected wear.

The silver holder, lid, and spoon are all in very good condition.
