Description
From the Sarreguemines Majolica line, a trompe l’oeil napkin bread tray, France, circa 1885- 1890.
An earthenware, faïence bread tray modeled as a cloth napkin with a floral and checkered pattern and a Greek key border. The two end handles are formed as the napkin tied into bows. The napkin drapes lengthwise, furthering the tromp l’oeil effect.
Clear glazing on a cream colored clay ground with a hand painted sepia glaze to the key pattern.
The last photo shows the corresponding Trompe L’Oeil Egg & Napkin Pâté Terrine or egg box – offered separately.
Marked: Sarreguemines Majolica, the mold number 1450
17 in. L x 10 in. W x 2.25 in. H
In good antique condition – a small nip to the underside of one corner, not seen to the front of the platter. The expected minor darkening we often see to these clear glazed pieces.
