Description
From the Sarreguemines Majolica line, a trompe l’oeil egg box or Pâté Terrine, France, circa 1885- 1890.
An earthenware, faïence lidded egg box modeled as fresh eggs wrapped in a cloth napkin with a floral and checkered pattern and a Greek key border. An egg forms the top knob, another egg peaks out from one corner. Cleverly done – loosely square shaped, furthering the tromp l’oeil effect.
Clear glazing on a cream colored clay ground with a hand painted sepia glaze to the key pattern.
The last photo shows the tureen sitting on a corresponding bread tray – offered separately.
