A mid 19th Century, circa 1860, Majolica glazed, Staffordshire spill vase of an elephant standing on a mottled glazed, oval base. A spill vase will have a cylindrical holder for containing splints, spills or tapers for transferring fire, for example to light a candle from a lighted hearth fire.
The beast wears a fringed and tasseled blanket painted in pink and green beneath a howdah shaped as a castle rook tower, which would hold the spills. Brightly glazed overall, the rook is lined in turquoise. Realistically molded, charming in subject.
