Description

A dark blue on white earthenware transfer printed platter in the Birds and Fruit pattern, Joseph Stubbs and Kent Potteries, of Longport, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, circa 1828-1830 – the Late Georgian Era.

Transfer printed in the underglaze tissue process with a pearlware glaze, two birds enjoy a feast of grapes and other fruits in the central cartouche, surrounded by a wide, running border of stylized flowers and leaves.

The color is a brilliant deep cobalt blue. This is a classic example of early 19th-century British dark blue transferware.

The pattern is identifiable by the rim’s signature scrolling and fan-like floral cartouches separated by hanging, bell-shaped flower clusters.

The central scene is printed against a very finely textured, stippled background, creating the deep, rich contrast characteristic of Stubbs pieces.
