From France, a signed Palissy style majolica paperweight, a lizard on a mound, Thomas Sergent, School of Paris, circa 1875-1879.
Thomas-Victor Sergent developed an enthusiasm for creating “Palissy Ware,” a genre of nineteenth-century ceramics inspired by the work of the Renaissance potter Bernard Palissy (1510 – 1589). He won a bronze medal for his work at the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
This desk weight shows a realistically molded and colored lizard sitting on an earthy brown mound with applied leaves, ferns, shells, and a butterfly. Unbelievable detail, from the scales on the lizard to the leaves of the pond plants.
A rare, one of a kind, sculptural piece for the discerning collector. Signed by hand on the verso, with the initials T.S. for Thomas Sergent.
