From Wedgwood, a rustic covered butter server with a cow finial, Staffordshire England – date marked 1875.

An extremely rare example of 19th Century Agrarian Nostalgia.

Glazed in mottled greens and browns, the two-piece server is comprised of a deep dish with an integral butter compartment or bell, and a cover with a reclining cow.

The lid is modeled as a tiered slatted fence, the cow is glazed in cream with brown spots.

The cow is modeled beautifully.

This motif was later copied by both Griffen Smith and Hill and George Jones for their majolica butter and cheese keepers.

7.25 in. Diameter x 3.75 in. H – the butter bell itself measures 3.75 in. Diameter x 1.5 in.H

Marked: Impressed Wedgwood with the date code FGD, the D for year 1875.

In remarkable condition. An older nip to the bottom rim of the lid, unseen when seated.

The expected discoloring to the lighter glazing of the interior.
