Description
A set of two strawberry and grape leaf plates, from Samuel Alcock & Co, Burslem, Staffordshire, England, circa 1850.
This pair is being offered AS IS, both showing issues due to metal plate hangers. Still displaying beautifully. Ideal for a plate wall.
A central grape leaf is shown with a vine border, along with purple bunches of grapes and the berries and blossoms of the strawberry plant.
The bold color and glazing technique is distinctive to Alcock majolica pottery.
The mottled turquoise blue, green and brown glazing to the verso is also a hallmark of Alcock.
These plates have very bold coloring and are considered scarce.
Measures: 9.0 in. diameter x .75 in. height.
Marked with the Beehive, SA & Co.
One plate has a rim chip due to a plate hanger. Light wear to the rear rim.
The second plate has two rim chips, also due to a plate hanger.
These flaws are easily covered by the plate hangers, which are included.
