Description
A French majolica asparagus server made by Creil et Montereau, circa 1890. A large oval earthenware master server, although made in one piece, has the trompe l’oeil effect of a brown woven basket sitting on a teal blue fluted under tray. Open handles at each end are formed of two curved, realistically painted asparagus spears. The footed back side is glazed in a turquoise wash and shows an impressed mark, B5, a mold number.
