A rare six-well majolica glazed oyster plate by George Jones, Stoke-on-Trent, England, circa early 1870s.
A Palissy period, realistically modeled oyster showing six scallop shaped wells glazed in a mottled tortoise shell, separated by raised bands of spiral shells and seaweed. A center white shell shaped well for holding a dipping sauce or lemons, with additional white shells at the rim.
The green and brown mottled glazing is seen on the verso along with a small unglazed area or ‘thumbprint.’ with a pattern number written in black ink. This mark is distinctive to George Jones pieces.
