Description

A scarce Odd Fellow or Mason themed Pearlware plate, from the Staffordshire region of England, attributed to Sunderland Potteries, circa 1820 – 1830.

One of a pair, this is plate A.

Hand painted, with a floral center and a star inner border in a lustered coloring of bittersweet reds, pink, orange and green.

The wide shaped rim show various symbols used by The Odd Fellows and the Masons societies; the all-seeing eye of the Masons, celestial bodies, a book, the hourglass, and the eye set into an open hand. Some of these symbols represent blessings, unity, sympathy, and strength.

On a white pearlware body – entirely hand painted, with some raised mold work.

The usual light wear to the rim. In very good antique condition.
