A large English Majolica pitcher attributed to Thomas Forester of The Phoenix Pottery Works, Longton, Staffordshire, England, circa early 1879.
A pond scene shows a bird flying over a wading crane under a bamboo tree in a stand of bullrushes, on a turquoise ground. The base is molded as cut, side by side yellow ochre bamboo stalks. A cobalt blue shaped handle shows raised bamboo leaves, a pink interior. The scene repeats on both sides of the pitcher. Beautiful raised mold work in the Aesthetic taste.
Marked with the number of the glazer.
8.75 in. H x 8.5 in. at the widest point.
In very good antique condition. Two small glaze slips, one to the spout and one to the rim. The expected overall crazing.
