An incredible two-piece Barbotine Art Nouveau asparagus serving set consisting of a pierced and footed drainer with a large under platter, from the Luneville pottery, France, circa 1880-1910. White asparagus is a springtime delicacy in Northern Europe, this set was made specifically for serving them.
The oval under tray shows a double arch pattern of leaves framing globe artichoke heads and purple tipped white asparagus. The shaped leaf edge rim is glazed in spring greens and teal blue.
The drainer is raised on four feet formed as artichoke stems, the rim follows the leaves and spears of the asparagus plant. Pierced for draining into the under platter, both pieces are molded in high relief.
