Portuguese Belo Olive Green Cabbage Leaf Plates, S/8 – 1930-1950 – SOLD

Description

SOLD

A set of eight cabbage leaf glazed terracotta plates, Fàbrica Soares Belo, Caldas da Rainha, circa 1930-1950.

The Fàbrica Belo operated primarily from 1927-1962 in Caldas da Rainha, the capital of Portuguese pottery. Caldas da Rainha is a region rich in clay, where people have been making earthenware vessels since neolithic times.

Run by Jose Avelino, a specialist in glazes and terracotta, the son of Avelino Soares Belo who founded his own workshop in 1920.  Jose modernized the family workshop while maintaining the production of his father’s molds.

This set of cabbage plates is glazed in a dark olive green, richer than the lighter green glazing found on the newer pieces.

8 inches in diameter x 1 inch deep.

Impressed with the Belo imprint, and the mold number 262/2

Wonderful conditions, one plate has a tiny rim nick, nothing to detract.
