Description

A hand painted faience oyster plate made by Saint- Jean de Bretagne, near Quimper, France – circa 1960’s.

Saint-Jean de Bretagne earthenware became a thriving industry after the Second World War. A boldly colored shaped plate – six orange wells shaped like scallop shells are separated by sprigs of green seaweed. A central round well is for lemons or a dipping sauce. The wells and rim are outlined in black against a white ground. A graphic pattern, updated from the classic Quimper style pottery.

Marked by the maker and initialed by the painter on the verso. Pierced for hanging.

Excellent vintage condition.
